Saint Cyril of Jerusalem

Bishop · catechist · preacher

Saint Cyril was bishop of Jerusalem and a major teacher of Christian initiation. His Catechetical Lectures explain the creed, repentance, baptism, and Christian doctrine, while the Mystagogical Catecheses interpret the rites of baptism, chrism, and Eucharist for the newly initiated. These texts are among the most important witnesses to fourth-century liturgy and sacramental theology. Cyril experienced exile during the Arian controversies.
