Saint Clement I of Rome

Saint Clement I was an early bishop of Rome traditionally identified as a coworker of the apostles. The letter known as 1 Clement, sent from the Roman church to Corinth, appeals for restored order, humility, and obedience after a dispute over deposed presbyters. It is one of the earliest Christian writings outside the New Testament and an important witness to Roman ecclesial concern beyond its local community. Later legends about Clement’s life and martyrdom are less historically secure.
