THE ATTRIBUTION IS TRADITIONAL AND NOT ACCEPTED BY THIS EDITION: Lake heads his introduction "The so-called second epistle of Clement" and records that the work is never quoted by Clement of Alexandria, is absent from the Latin and Coptic versions, and was associated with I Clement in the Greek and Syriac manuscript tradition rather than authored by the same hand. It is also a homily rather than a letter -- the writer states at XIX.1 that he is reading aloud to a congregation -- and Lake notes it is "really more a sermon than a letter." The traditional title is kept because it is what citations name; the byline discloses the authorship question instead of asserting Clement. Carries the standard chapter:verse versification used in modern citation.
