Jean-Baptiste Du Hamel

Priest · philosopher · scientist · biblical scholar

Jean-Baptiste Du Hamel was a French priest, philosopher, scientist, and biblical scholar who became the first secretary of the French Academy of Sciences. His wide learning ranged from natural philosophy to theology. In biblical studies he produced annotated editions and discussions that engaged textual and historical questions while remaining within Catholic orthodoxy. Haydock cites Du Hamel as one of the learned early modern authorities used to illuminate difficult passages.
