Saint Anselm of Canterbury

Saint Anselm was a Benedictine monk, abbot of Bec, archbishop of Canterbury, and Doctor of the Church. He is known for a disciplined approach to theology summarized by the phrase “faith seeking understanding.” His Proslogion contains the famous argument concerning God as that than which nothing greater can be conceived, while Cur Deus Homo examines the fittingness of the Incarnation and atonement. Anselm also defended the freedom of the Church against royal control.
