- Transcribed from the OCR of the dated scan, English recto pages only (the edition is facing-page Greek/English). AUTHORSHIP IS UNKNOWN and this edition says so: Lake heads his introduction "The epistle to Diognetus is an anonymous writing of uncertain date", and the Diognetus addressed cannot be securely identified. The byline is NOT "Mathetes", the name some editions print: the author describes himself at XI.1 as a disciple of apostles (Greek mathetes), a common noun an early editor mistook for a proper name. CHAPTER I CARRIES NO PRINTED VERSE NUMBER in this edition — its single paragraph is printed under the numeral I and the printed verse numbering begins at II.1; it is addressed here as 1:1, the form used in citation. Chapters XI and XII are widely held to be a later addition from a different hand; they are printed here as Lake prints them, without separation.
